Texas Christian puts away Minnesota in opener, 23-17

- Wire reports

Trevone Boykin threw for 246 yards and a touchdown and ran for 92 yards and another score to help No. 2 Texas Christian outlast Minnesota, 23-17, on Thursday at Minneapolis.

Boykin started his push for the Heisman Trophy by completing 26 of 42 passes. But he also threw a pass for an interception, and the Horned Frogs had a difficult time getting their frenetic offense rolling against Minnesota’s determined defense. Their 23 points were their fewest scored since Nov. 9, 2013.

Jaden Oberkrom made three field goals, including a 53-yarder, and Josh Doctson had eight catches for 74 yards and a touchdown for Texas Christian.

Georgia Tech romps

Freshman Marcus Marshall ran for 184 yards and two long touchdowns in his college debut, Patrick Skov scored three touchdowns in his first game at Georgia Tech, and the No. 16 Yellow Jackets cruised to a 69-6 victory over Alcorn State at Atlanta.

Georgia Tech scored on its first seven possessions against the Football Championship Subdivision school from Mississippi. Marshall scored on a 49-yard run with his first handoff and followed with a 64-yarder late in the third quarter. Skov, a graduate transfer from Stanford, scored on runs of three, 21 and four yards.

Arizona prevails

Anu Solomon threw four touchdown passes to help No. 22 Arizona beat Texas San Antonio, 42-32, but the Wildcats suffered a big blow when All-American linebacker Scooby Wright went out early with a left knee injury at Tucson.

Arizona sputtered on offense most of the night and allowed Texas San Antonio, a team returning two offensive starters, to rack up 525 total yards.

Wright, a junior who swept the major defensive-player-of-the-year awards last season, went down in the first quarter and spent the second half in street clothes, walking with a cane.

Rutgers suspensions

Five Rutgers football players have been suspended after one was charged in case involving two home invasions and four were charged with assault in a case involving an attack on a group of people in New Brunswick, N.J., in April.

Prosecutors say defensive backs Ruhann Peele, Nadir Barnwell, and Delon Stephenson and fullback Razohnn Gross were charged with aggravated assault, riot and conspiracy to commit a riot for a fight that left a man with a broken jaw. They say defensive back Andre Boggs was charged in two home-invasion robberies in April and May.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the men had attorneys who could comment.
