Klitschko withdraws

Wladimir Klitschko pulled out of his heavyweigh­t title defense against Tyson Fury because of a torn tendon in his left calf. The Ukrainian was scheduled to defend his IBF, IBO, WBO and WBA belts against the British fighter in Dusseldorf, Germany, on Oct. 24.

Chicago Bulls starting small forward Mike Dunleavy underwent back surgery and will sit out eight to 10 weeks. Dunleavy faces the possibilit­y of missing 12 to 16 regular-season games.

Henrik Stenson overcame a few mistakes off the tee and was solid on the back nine for a two-under 68 to stretch his lead to three shots over Jordan Spieth in the Tour Championsh­ip at Atlanta. Stenson was at nine-under 131.

Jesper Parnevik birdied three of his last four holes on the par-71 Poppy Hills course for a share of the first-round lead with Tom Byrum at five-under 66 in the Champions Tour’s First Tee Open at Pebble Beach. Byrum was at fiveunder 67 on the par-72 Pebble Beach course.

Graeme Storm chipped in for eagle on the par-five 10th and finished with a four-under 67 for a share of the second-round lead in the European Open at Bad Griesbach, Germany. Ross Fisher and Charl Schwartzel matched Storm at 10-under 132.

NASCAR driver Carl Edwards turned a lap of 137.980 mph to win the pole at Loudon, N.H., and give Joe Gibbs Racing a shot at its

fourth straight Sprint Cup victory.

Larry Dixon took the top-fuel qualifying lead in the NHRA Midwestern Nationals at Gateway Motorsport­s Park at Madison, Ill.

Stan Wawrinka withdrew from the Open de Moselle because of an ankle injury while Gilles Simon made it to the semifinals at Metz, France. Wawrinka had been scheduled to face Philipp Kohlschrei­ber in the quarterfin­als at the indoor hard-court tournament. . . . Milos Raonic swept Tommy Robredo, 6-1, 6-2, at the St. Petersburg Open in Russia. In the semifinals, Raonic will face Roberto Bautista Agut, and Dominic Thiem will take on Joao Sousa .... Dominika Cibulkova beat Ana Ivanovic, 7-6 (5), 6-3, in the Toray Pan-Pacific Open at Tokyo. In the semifinals, Cibulkova will play Agniezka Radwanska, and Caroline Wozniacki will take on Belinda Bencic.
