JOHN STAMOS

-

It’s a long way from the preening Jesse Katsopolis on Full House to Jimmy, a vain, bachelor grandfather on Fox’s new comedy Grandfathered, premiering Sept. 29. Or is it? John Stamos, 50, is still having fun playing off his looks—and playing percussion, when he can, with the Beach Boys.

Does portraying a grandfather bother

you? “It doesn’t. I think it’s fun making fun of myself. That’s the approach we took from the beginning.”

Your Grandfathered character is a restaurateur. Have you ever thought

about having your own eatery? “My father was Greek and had hamburger joints that I worked at as a kid, so I’ve already kind of done that. I’ve always thought about retiring either in Greece or Australia, and I’d like to maybe open a bar, have some music and give away free shrimp to girls.”

Are you still playing with the Beach

Boys? “I still do quite a bit if I’m free. They’re my heroes. The first concert I ever went to was the Beach Boys, and I always dreamed of one day meeting them. I never imagined I’d get to play with them, so it’s been like a dream come true that’s been going on since ’85.”

What was it like to reunite with the cast of Full House for the 2016

Netflix sequel, Fuller House? “It’s magical. We have a tremendous amount of love for each other that never really ended. It’s not a reunion for us because we’ve never left each other’s sides.”
