High school QB dies

A New Jersey high school quarterbac­k died after suffering an injury during a game Friday night, officials at Warren Hills Regional High in Washington, N.J., said. Cause of death for Evan Murray was undetermin­ed and authoritie­s said an autopsy was planned. People who attended the game told the New York Daily News that Murray, 17, walked off the field under his own power after taking a hit late in the second quarter. A short time later, he apparently collapsed.

In the NFL, Seattle activated safety Kam Chancellor and waived former USC defensive back Dion Bailey before Sunday’s game against Chicago. Chancellor last week ended a holdout that started July 31. . . . Jacksonvil­le downgraded oft-injured former USC receiver Marqise Lee from probable to questionab­le for its game at New England today because of a hamstring injury.

Deontay Wilder stopped Johann Duhaupas 55 seconds into the 11th round at Birmingham, Ala., to retain his WBC heavyweigh­t title.

In tennis, Gilles Simon beat Martin Klizan, 6-4, 6-4, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Philipp Kohlschrei­ber, 6-3, 6-4, to set up an all-French final in the Open de Moselle at Metz, France. . . . Milos Raonic beat Roberto Bautista Agut, 6-2, 7-6 (2), and Joao Sousa upset Dominic Thiem, 6-4, 7-6 (5), in semifinals at the St. Petersburg Open in Russia. . . . Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki lost to Belinda Bencic, 6-2, 6-4, and Agnieszka Radwanska defeated Dominika Cibulkova, 6-4, 6-1, in semifinals at the Toray Pan-Pacific Open in Tokyo.
