Go green to get to the airport

- By Terry Gardner the ride to San Francisco’s downtown BART station is $10.05.

You don’t have to spend a lot of green to go green when you’re traveling to or from an airport. Here are transportation options for some U.S. airports, compiled with help from CheapFlights.com and visitor bureaus. Fares generally are less than $10.

LAX

8 Flyaway buses (www.lawa .org/FlyAway) offer daily scheduled service from each terminal and to and from Van Nuys, Union Station, Westwood, Santa Monica and Hollywood. A Long Beach location and a second Van Nuys location for the Orange line are expected in December.

These buses depart LAX from the “FlyAway/Long Distance Vans” signs on the arrivals level. One-way fares are $8-$10, except for Long Beach service, which will have a $7 introductory fare for at least six months.

8 Metro buses: Free LAX G and C shuttle buses connect to/from public transit. The G bus goes to the Metro Green Line Aviation Station, and the C bus connects with Parking Lot C, which abuts the LAX City Bus Transit Center (www.lat.ms/20ot43h). Bus fare for Santa Monica (www.bigbluebus

.com), Culver City (www.lat.ms /1kmTzVU) and Torrance

(www.lat.ms/1RKTJkQ) costs $1 one way. The one-way Metro bus fare is $1.75 (www.metro.net/riding/fares).

Burbank Bob Hope Airport

8 The airport is a seven-minute walk from the Regional Intermodal Transportation Center with Amtrak, Metrolink

(www.lat.ms/20ovS0w) and local bus service. Metrolink fares (metrolinktrains.com/tickets

pricing) vary by distance. Example: a one-way fare from downtown Burbank is $5; the ride from Irvine is $12.75.

Long Beach Airport 8 Long Beach Transit (www

.lbtransit.com) routes 102, 104 and 111 run to/from the airport. Bus fare is $1.25. Passengers can connect to the Metro Blue Line at Wardlow Station. San Francisco International Airport

8 Bay Area Rapid Transit (www.bart.gov) offers an inexpensive ride to/from both SFO and Oakland. SFO’s Airport BART station is at International Terminal G, and a free Airtrain is available from other terminals. BART fares vary by distance: A one-way fare from SFO to the Embarcadero costs $8.25.; the fare to downtown Berkeley is $9.25.

8 Shared-ride shuttles (www.mccarran.com/Go/Shuttles) or RTC of Southern Nevada (www .lat.ms/1MCSK8o) buses are your best bet. RTC has routes that stop at McCarran, and Route 109 runs to/from the South Strip Transfer Station. A one-way fare is $2.
