Arrieta reportedly gets deal

Chicago Cubs ace Jake Arrieta has agreed to a $ 10.7 million, one- year contract, avoiding arbitratio­n with the highest one- year deal for a pitcher eligible for arbitratio­n for the second time. A person familiar with the negotiatio­ns disclosed the agreement. The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been announced by the team. Arrieta, who turns 30 in March, f inished 22- 6 last year and won the National League Cy Young Award.

Reliever J. J. Hoover won his salary arbitratio­n case against the Cincinnati Reds, getting a raise from $ 535,000 to $ 1.4 million. The team had argued for $ 1.225 million.

Johnny Manziel is facing a reopened criminal investigat­ion by police following allegation­s that he hit his former girlfriend last weekend in Texas. He was dropped by his agent Friday, was ordered this week to stay away from his ex- girlfriend for two years and will be released by the Cleveland Browns next month after two tumultuous seasons.

Manziel’s ex- girlfriend Colleen Crowley told police the former Texas A& M star struck her “several times” at a Dallas hotel and later when they drove back to her apartment in Fort Worth. The two cities’ police department­s had said they closed their investigat­ions Thursday, but Dallas police said Friday that it was reopening the case after receiving a complaint of a domestic violence assault. Crowley told WFAA- TV in a statement issued through a spokespers­on that she met with domestic violence specialist­s at the Dallas Police Department a day earlier to describe what happened on Jan. 29.

Manziel’s father, Paul, said the family has made two unsuccessf­ul attempts in the past week to get the NFL player into a rehab clinic.

“I truly believe if they can’t get him help, he won’t live to see his 24th birthday,” Paul Manziel said.

Former Wisconsin and Denver Broncos running back Montee Ball has been arrested on suspicion of felony battery after a dispute with his girlfriend early Friday at a Madison, Wis., hotel. A woman told police Ball threw her in the air and she cut her leg on a table, requiring stitches. Police said that Ball told authoritie­s he pushed her and she fell.

James Hahn took the lead with a bogey- free, sixunder 65 in breezy conditions at the Waste Management Phoenix Open at Scottsdale, Ariz. Hahn had a 10- under 132 total on the Stadium Course to enter the weekend a stroke ahead of Rickie Fowler ( 68) and Danny Lee ( 66). Fowler rebounded from a three- putt bogey on the par- four 17th with the birdie on the par- four 18th.

Lydia Ko hit the ball only 22 times in a span of 11 hours in the Coates Golf Championsh­ip and f inished where she started, with a share of the lead, at Ocala, Fla. Ko three- putted from 15 feet for bogey in 39- degree weather to finish the rain- delayed second round in the morning. In the afternoon, she made one birdie in six holes to get back to seven under par and share the lead with Ha Na Jang, who played 24 holes for the day. None of the 75 players who made the cut finished the third round.

Spain’s Rafael Cabrera- Bello shot his second consecutiv­e 67 to grab a one- stroke lead after the second round of the Dubai Desert Classic in the United Arab Emirates. Ernie Els also had a 67 to surge into a three- way tie for second with Trevor Fisher Jr. and Danny Willett at nine- under 136. Rory McIlroy shot a 72 to finish at four- under.

Corey Pavin and Todd Hamilton shot six- under 66s in blustery conditions to share the f irst- round lead in the Allianz Championsh­ip at Boca Raton, Fla. Pavin made four birdies in a five- hole stretch on the Old Course despite 20- mph winds and temperatur­es in the 50s at the start of the PGA Tour Champions event.

Dallas Stars forward Jason Spezza was placed on injured reserve because of an upper- body injury from going headfirst into the boards in a game Thursday against Colorado. No timetable is set for his return.

On Feb. 18, the Utah Jazz and Washington Wizards will make up their Jan. 23 game, which had been postponed by last month’s snowstorm.

Oregon running back Thomas Tyner has decided to take a medical retirement after sitting out all of last season because of a shoulder injury. Tyner was the Ducks’ third- leading rusher as a freshman in 2013 and then again as a sophomore in 2014.
