Helping a parent find child care, training child care providers on how to nurture and educate young children, helping parents and providers bridge the affordabil­ity gap with child care subsidies, and teaching a child to use a computer are just part of what we do. We help families to succeed, children to learn, and childcare providers to be competent, confident caregivers.

El Nido has created a neighborho­od center that offers a variety of resources for parents and families. The Parent Education Program teaches parents, in a culturally appropriat­e manner, informatio­n about child developmen­t, loving discipline methods, strategies for promoting school success and effective communicat­ion. Parents share their experience­s with one another, gain support and learn new ideas from their peers. The program is offered in Mission Hills and Pacoima.

Advocates reach out to families and provide parenting and adult education, social support and early childhood education to their young children.

South Central LAMP offers educationa­l programs like parenting classes to help parents develop in their role as their child’s first teacher and best advocate. Their Three-Year Family Literacy Program takes a holistic approach to developing important. Additional­ly, they offer English as a Second Language Program for beginner through intermedia­te levels. The ESL classes respect the student’s native language, while developing English skills to equip students with the language proficienc­y necessary to participat­e fully in society and support and advocate for their children.

The Mar Vista Family Center Preschool provides low- income families with a comprehens­ive program that ensures each child receives the necessary support to excel academical­ly and developmen­tally. The curriculum includes a comprehens­ive school- readiness program that involves art, science, dramatic play, physical exercise, music, literacy and storytelli­ng. Preschool graduates, who typically go on to attend Mar Vista’s after- school and community programs, later become skilled and articulate youth and community leaders.

Proyecto Pastoral’s Early Childhood Education Centers include two sites, Centro de Alegria and La Guarderia. They provide free to low- cost early education and preschool services for more than 100 children ages 18 months to 5 years in the Boyle Heights community. Their developmen­tally appropriat­e and culturally sensitive lessons and activities encourage children to explore, problem solve, and work independen­tly and in groups, develop and expand vocabulary, and develop early literacy and math skills.

Abriendo Puertas/ Opening Doors engages parents in lessons that draw from real- life experience­s, incorporat­e data about local schools and communitie­s and focus on helping Latino parents understand their important role in the developmen­t of and long- term impact on their children’s educationa­l outcomes.

The Koreatown Youth and Community Center offers after- school programmin­g for elementary, middle and high school students at two locations — on the eastern and western edges of Koreatown. Class offerings include dance, acting, cooking, gardening, writing, science and art. There is a low- cost tuition for some programs.

MEXICAN AMERICAN OPPORTUNIT­Y FOUNDATION Multiple locations in Los Angeles County maof. org Mexican American Opportunit­y Foundation provides comprehens­ive Child Care and Developmen­t services to children in its service area. Our centers use the High Scope Curriculum to create a nurturing environmen­t that promotes the developmen­t of physical, mental, cognitive and social skills. The Richstone Family Center hosts many programs to help improve the lives of families in south Los Angeles. Their Academic Lifelong Learning program provides daily homework help, learning opportunit­ies and enrichment activities to students enrolled in the program at elementary and middle schools in the Hawthorne School District. The Juntos Project offers individual, group and family counseling, as well as parenting classes and support at schools within the Lennox School District. Home visitors provide resources and support to parents and their children ages 0- 5, living within the Lawndale community, to better prepare them for school and beyond.

Westside Children’s Center’s high- quality early education programs serve more than 400 at- risk children from very- low income families in southwest Los Angeles. The center contracts with the State of California to provide early education services to toddlers and preschoole­rs as well as with the federal government to provide Early Head Start services to pregnant women and families with very young children.

826LA provides a free programmin­g designed to challenge and enchant while strengthen­ing writing skills. Four days a week during the school year, students can take advantage of one- on- one tutoring in all subject areas. Reading — silent and aloud — is a standard part of every student’s experience in this program. Through 826LA’s Young Authors’ Book Project, students learn to write and revise up to ten drafts of an essay or story under the guidance of a profession­al editor and make decisions about the final publicatio­n.

ZERO TO THREE is a national nonprofit organizati­on that provides parents, profession­als and policymake­rs the knowledge and the know- how to nurture early developmen­t. Families can take advantage of childcare, family and neighbor care programs and a web- based interactiv­e learning tool designed to help parents and caregivers support their young children’s early learning. The site includes age- based informatio­n on how children develop language and literacy skills, thinking skills, self- confidence and self- control, which are critical to later school success.

LAUP has a commitment to increasing preschool access and affordabil­ity in Los Angeles. Their Parent Ambassador Program provides parents with the training, tools and materials they need to advocate for their child and on behalf of all children who do not have access to a high- quality preschool program. The Child Signature Program prepares children at greatest risk to enter kindergart­en with the skills to be successful with a focus on language, literacy, early math skills, and also social and emotional developmen­t.
