Busch wins pole, then race

- Preakness winner Exaggerator’s status for next Saturday’s Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga is questionable after an unimpressive workout.

Kyle Busch crashed Tony Stewart’s scripted farewell party and pushed Jeff Gordon’s comeback bid to the middle of the pack by accomplishing one of his biggest career goals — claiming his first Brickyard 400 pole at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Busch, the defending race winner, had the fastest lap of 184.634 mph in the third and final round of qualifying, just ahead of Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Carl Edwards.

Busch then led all but one lap to win the NASACAR Xfinity Series race at Indianapolis for the second straight year. The 2015 Sprint Cup champion beat Kevin Harvick by 0.415 seconds.

After two crashes, a bloodied knee and even a run up legendary Mont Ventoux, a relieved Chris Froome can cruise into Paris on Sunday and secure his third Tour de France title in four years. Britain’s Froome kept his lead intact during the final day of climbing — and descending — in the Alps and heads to the mostly ceremonial finish on the Champs-Elysees with a comfortable advantage of 4 minutes 5 seconds over Romain Bardet of France.

In tennis, Venus Williams rallied in the second set and defeated fellow American Alison Riske, 6-1, 7-6 (2), to reach the final of the Bank of the West Classic at Palo Alto. She will face Britain’s Johanna Konta . ... Ivo Karlovic of Croatia saved all five break points he faced and ran his service-game record to 43 for 43 this week, beating fifth-seeded American Steve Johnson, 6-4, 6-4, to reach the Citi Open final at Washington. Karlovic will face No. 2-seeded Gael Monfils, who broke No. 7 Alexander Zverev’s serve four times in a 6-4, 6-0 victory. On the women’s side, Lauren Davis won an all-American semifinal over Jessica Pegula, 6-2, 6-3, and will face Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer for the title.
