Notre Dame’s Butler is charged with two felonies

A Notre Dame cornerback accused of tackling a police officer and punching him in the side and stomach during an altercatio­n outside a bar near campus was charged Tuesday with felony counts of resisting law enforcemen­t and battery against a public safety official.

Devin Butler was arrested Saturday and released on a $1,000 bond, but St. Joseph County (Ind.) Prosecutor Kenneth P. Cotter requested more time to investigat­e the case and determine what charges were appropriat­e. Butler is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.

Butler’s arrest came hours after five teammates were arrested in Fulton County, about 40 miles south of South Bend. Indiana State Police said a trooper stopped a car for speeding, detected the odor of marijuana and with the help of a drug-sniffing dog found the marijuana and a handgun in the car.

Starting safety Max Redfield, running back Dexter Williams, linebacker Te’Von Coney, receiver Kevin Stepherson and cornerback Ashton White were charged with misdemeano­r marijuana possession. Redfield, Stepherson and Williams face an additional misdemeano­r charge of possession of an unlicensed handgun.

Coach Brian Kelly announced Sunday that Redfield had been dismissed from the team and Butler, who already was out until October with a broken foot, had been suspended indefinite­ly. Kelly said the others faced internal team discipline.

Utah partially reinstated suspended receiver Cory ButlerByrd a day after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeano­r charge of criminal mischief for damaging a police car and building last month.

The school said that Coach Kyle Whittingha­m will allow Butler-Byrd to participat­e in practice and other team activities immediatel­y but he will remain suspended from playing in games indefinite­ly.

Taysom Hill will be Brigham Young’s starting quarterbac­k, after beating out sophomore Tanner Mangum. Mangum took over as starter in 2015 after Hill suffered a season-ending foot injury in the opener. BYU hosts UCLA on Sept. 17. tice and will not play Thursday night at Seattle. Quarterbac­k Tom Brady is ready to play after cutting his right thumb with scissors in a “silly accident” before the New England Patriots’ preseason game against the Chicago Bears last week. Brady said he missed the first two practices this week for personal reasons, but that he’s available and ready to play when New England visits Carolina on Friday.

Brady said the accident with the scissors occurred when he was trying to get something out of his cleat. The scissors slipped and cut his thumb.

Linebacker Vince Williams signed a three-year contract with the Steelers that will keep him in Pittsburgh through the 2018 season.

Tight end Craig Stevens, who has spent his entire eight-year career with the Tennessee Titans, is retiring at age 31.

The Lakers signed forward Brandon Ingram, the second overall pick in the June draft out of Duke, to a contract. Terms of the deal were not released.

A four-mile stretch of the 210 Freeway through the heart of Pasadena will be named the Jackie Robinson Memorial Highway under a plan approved by the California Legislatur­e.
