No. 2 Clemson 19, at Auburn 13: Deshaun Watson passed for 248 yards, including 174 to Mike Williams in his return from an injury, and Clemson escaped after Auburn’s desperatio­n pass was batted down in the end zone. Clemson struggled to put away the opener even though Auburn produced little offense for much of the game while swapping three quarterbac­ks in and out. South Alabama 21, Mississipp­i State 20: The Jaguars pulled off the upset when Westin Graves’ 28-yard field goal try smacked off the upright in the final seconds. A fourtouchd­own underdog, South Alabama beat an SEC team for the first time in school history.

No. 18 Georgia 33, No. 22 North Carolina 24: Nick Chubb rushed for 222 yards in 32 carries in his return from a gruesome knee injury, including a 55-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter at Atlanta that clinched the Bulldogs’ victory in Kirby Smart’s debut as their coach.

at Arkansas 21, Louisiana Tech 20: Austin Allen connected with tight end Jeremy Sprinkle for a four-yard, fourth-down touchdown pass in the fourth quarter and the Razorbacks rallied to prevent another SEC upset after trailing for much of the second half. Southern Mississipp­i 44, at Kentucky 35: Ito Smith was the workhorse with 173 yards in 36 carries and teammate George Payne added 100 yards in 16 carries in the Golden Eagles’ victory. Nick Mullens passed for 258 yards and a pair of touchdowns. at No. 25 Florida 24, Massachuse­tts 7: Luke Del Rio threw two touchdown passes in his first career start, and the Gators did just enough to extend the nation’s longest winning streak in season openers to 27.
