76ers’ Simmons has broken bone in foot

- staff and wire reports

Ben Simmons has a broken bone in his right foot and it’s unknown how long the No. 1 overall pick will be sidelined for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Simmons was injured Friday during the final training camp scrimmage at Stockton University in New Jersey. The 76ers said Simmons rolled an ankle, and X-rays and an MRI exam revealed a fractured fifth metatarsal bone.

The Australian forward played at Louisiana State last season. He missed time early during his stay with the Tigers while waiting for an ankle injury to heal.

Simmons’ injury is the latest blow to a franchise that has been beset in recent years by injuries to their players. Joel Embiid, the No. 3 overall pick in 2014, has yet to play because of surgeries on his right foot. Nerlens Noel missed his rookie year in 2013 with a torn ACL. Jahlil Okafor, the No. 3 overall pick last year, had his rookie season cut short with season-ending surgery on his right knee.

Chris Bosh said the Miami Heat did not tell him before going public earlier this week with their belief that he will not play for the team again. The Heat denied that assertion, with a team spokesman saying that calls, texts and emails to Bosh in the days before team President Pat Riley made the announcement were not acknowledged.

Bosh’s last two seasons ended at the All-Star break because of the discovery of blood clots.

“I guess my career in Miami is done,” Bosh said in a video released through LeBron James’ digital platform called Uninterrupted. “My career’s not done. But I did not expect that, at all.”

The Minnesota Lynx’s Cheryl Reeve is the WNBA coach of the year and Lynx center Sylvia Fowles is the defensive player of the year, the league announced.

Masina, 19, is accused of assaulting the woman after she passed out after a July party in Utah, according to charging documents. L.A. County prosecutors are also reviewing sexual assault allegations.

Masina’s lawyer, Greg Skordas, said he does not expect Los Angeles County officials to press charges in that case.

Masina is a Utah native who played at Brighton High in Cottonwood Heights, a Salt Lake suburb.

Prosecutors said he has known the alleged victim, also 19, for several years and allegedly assaulted her after she drank alcohol and smoked marijuana with him at a July 25 party in Cottonwood Heights. Masina acknowledged having sex with her, prosecutors said in court documents. Skordas has said the sex was consensual.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly and NHLPA Executive Director Don Fehr both said they expect the next World Cup of Hockey to be in 2020. Daly said he felt more “negative” about the chances the league’s players will be in a sixth straight Olympics because of the International Olympic Committee’s decision to not pay for NHL players’ travel and insurance.
