Simmons said to face surgery

A person with knowledge of the siutation confirmed to Philly.com that Phildelphi­a 76ers rookie Ben Simmons will undergo surgery next week to repair his broken right foot and will be sidelined three months. ESPN first reported the news.

An X-ray and MRI test Friday revealed the first overall pick in the NBA draft has an acute fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot. Simmons was hurt Friday when he landed on teammate Shawn Long’s foot in a training-camp scrimmage.

The New Orleans Saints say linebacker Dannell Ellerbe is out for Sunday’s game at San Diego. Ellerbe has not played a regular-season game because of a quadriceps injury.

Tyler Reddick held off teammate Daniel Hemric to win the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race Saturday night at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

It was Redick’s first victory of the season. He did not qualify for the Chase.

Chase for the Sprint Cup championsh­ip drivers Joey Logano, Kyle Busch and Austin Dillon are scheduled to pull double duty.

Leah Pritchett raced to her first career No. 1 qualifying spot in top fuel in the Dodge NHRA Nationals in Mohnton, Pa. Pritchett had a 3.705-second pass at 327.35 mph at Maple Grove Raceway. She won in Phoenix this year for her first career victory.

Matt Hagan topped the funny car field, Vincent Nobile was fastest in pro stock, and Andrew Hines qualified No. 1 in pro stock motorcycle in the third event in the six-race Countdown.

Heavily favored Flintshire lost for the first time this season, with Ectot winning the $500,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic by five lengths at Belmont Park in New York. The victory gave Ectot, a 5-year-old trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Jose Ortiz, a spot in the $4-million Turf on Nov. 5 at Santa Anita. Flintshire was second, followed by Twilight Eclipse.
