Packers add Knile Davis

- Wire reports

The Kansas City Chiefs traded backup running back Knile Davis to the Green Bay Packers, who desperately need to add depth to their injuryriddled backfield. The Packers gave up a conditional draft pick Tuesday for Davis, who has already started practicing with his new team.

The Packers needed help at running back with Eddie Lacy nursing a bothersome ankle and James Starks undergoing knee surgery.

Pittsburgh Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin officially ruled quarterback Ben Roethlisberger out and Landry Jones the starter for a showdown with the visiting New England Patriots on Sunday.

The tweaked left knee Roethlisberger suffered in the second quarter in a loss to Miami while trying to avoid a sack resulted in surgery on Monday. Though Roethlisberger prides himself on his toughness, he will sit out at least one game.

Tomlin declined to give a timeline for Roethlisberger’s potential return. The Steelers (4-2) are off next week and travel to Baltimore on Nov. 6. It’s possible Roethlisberger could be back by then, but Tomlin wouldn’t speculate on that Tuesday.

New York Jets wide receiver Eric Decker underwent surgery on his hip and faces a long recovery. The Jets announced on their website that the hip surgery was deemed necessary after Decker had an evaluation when he was placed on injured reserve last week because of a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

The team said the anticipated recovery time for Decker’s hip surgery is six months. When he is able to get off crutches during that period — it’s uncertain how long that will take — he will then have the surgery on his shoulder, with recovery time expected to be eight months.

Tampa Bay receiver Vincent Jackson was placed on injured reserve with a left leg injury, raising the possibility that he’s played his last game for the Buccaneers.

The team said that Jackson, who in the final season of a five-year contract that pays him more than $9 million in 2016, complained of discomfort in his left knee after playing the entire game during the Buccaneers’ 17-14 victory over Carolina on Oct. 10. An MRI exam revealed an injury to the 33year-old’s anterior cruciate ligament.

The Atlanta Falcons placed defensive end Derrick Shelby on injured reserve with a torn Achilles’ tendon, ending his season. Shelby left Sunday’s loss at Seattle with what was initially announced as a calf injury. Sharks have left to join the Indoor Football League. That leaves a four-team AFL that still hopes to operate in 2017.

The KISS reportedly didn’t inform players or seasonticket holders that the team had folded.

The story was first reported by the Orange County Register.

Stanford Coach David Shaw said running back Christian McCaffrey is feeling better and is hopeful that the 2015 Heisman Trophy finalist will be back in the lineup against Colorado on Saturday.

McCaffrey has been sidelined since suffering an undisclosed injury in the first half against Washington State on Oct. 8.

Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike is the new WNBA players’ union president. This season’s league most valuable player succeeds Tamika Catchings, who has retired from the WNBA.
