World Cinema is the most expansive section of the program. It showcases many of the most acclaimed international films of the year, from master auteurs as well as first-time directors with stunning debuts. All highlight the unique perspectives of artists
This year, an array of master filmmakers return to World Cinema with their latest films, many of which have been decorated with awards and premieres at other top festivals around the globe.
International cinema luminaries at AFI FEST 2016 include:
• Pedro Almodóvar with JULIETA from Spain • Bertrand Bonello with NOCTURAMA from France • Asghar Farhadi with THE SALESMAN from Iran • Mia Hansen-Løve with THINGS TO COME (L’AVENIR) from France • Pablo Larraín with NERUDA from Chile • Ken Loach with I, DANIEL BLAKE from the UK • Cristian Mungiu with GRADUATION (BACALAUREAT) from Romania • Danis Tanovic’ with DEATH IN SARAJEVO from Bosnia Returning to the festival with his sixth film is Canadian director Xavier Dolan, whose IT’S ONLY THE END OF THE WORLD (JUSTE LA FIN DU MONDE) was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes. Dolan’s entire filmography has played the festival, starting with 2009’s I KILLED MY MOTHER (J’AI TUÉ MA MÈRE). Seven official Best Foreign Language Film Oscar® entries are on display this year in World Cinema, including JULIETA from Spain, Juho Kuosmanen’s THE HAPPIEST DAY IN THE LIFE OF OLLI MÄKI from Finland, Asghar Farhadi’s THE SALESMAN from Iran and Martin Pieter Zandvliet’s LAND OF MINE from Denmark.
