Matchup: Nanette Barragan (D) vs. Isadore Hall (D)

Dynamic: The two Democrats running for the seat Rep. Janice Hahn is vacating are very different. Hall, a state senator who represents Compton, and Barragan, an attorney and former member of the Hermosa Beach City Council, emerged from a primary field of 10. The battle has been contentious, with Barragan hitting Hall for his ties to special interests in the oil, alcohol and tobacco industries and his camp criticizing her as not really being from the district. Barragan has won the backing of several progressive organizations, including Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ group Our Revolution.

Interesting fact: On primary election night in June, Hall was served with a subpoena to appear as a witness in a civil dispute between a Compton housing development and a group of tenants.
