31st District
Matchup: Pete Aguilar (D) vs. Paul Chabot (R)
Dynamic: Aguilar, the former mayor of Redlands, is going for a second term after being elected with 51.7% of the vote in 2014. It’s a rematch against Chabot, a military veteran who is a reserve San Bernardino County Sheriff ’s deputy. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee put Aguilar on a list of vulnerable Democrats last year, but stronger turnout during a presidential year is likely to preserve the seat for Aguilar. Race rating: Safe Democrat
Interesting fact: Chabot has put fighting terrorism at the center of his campaign in the district, which was hit in December by the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil since Sept. 11, 2001. During the primary, he sold “ISIS Hunting Permit” stickers. San Bernardino’s police chief and sheriff have both endorsed Aguilar.
