Wisconsin loses its top tackler

Linebacker Jack Cichy, the leading tackler for No. 11 Wisconsin, will miss the rest of the season with a torn pectoral muscle. He was hurt in the first half of Wisconsin’s 17-9 win Saturday over Iowa. Cichy hit the ground while sliding out of bounds after tackling Iowa running back Akrum Wadley with five seconds left in the game.

Georgia’s two leading tacklers will be able to play against No. 14 Florida after being cleared in a marijuana investigation. The school said that inside linebackers Natrez Patrick and Roquan Smith violated no university policies that would require a suspension.

Northwestern cornerback Matthew Harris, who hasn’t played since Sept. 10, announced his retirement from football. Harris was injured against Illinois State, with video showing him getting hit in the head while making a tackle.

John David Wicker has returned to San Diego State as athletic director, saying his top priority will be to deal with either building a new football stadium or getting a better deal if the Aztecs are to share a new stadium with the NFL’s Chargers. Wicker was introduced Monday as the replacement for Jim Sterk, who was hired away by Missouri in August. Wicker was San Diego State’s deputy athletic director from 2011 until leaving for Georgia Tech in July 2015 to serve as senior associate athletic director for operations.

Olympic figure skating champion and commentator Scott Hamilton, 58, has been diagnosed with a third brain tumor. People magazine reported that Hamilton has been diagnosed with a benign pituitary tumor. Hamilton has survived two previous brain tumors and also a bout with testicular cancer.
