Woods falters at finish with 73

- — David Wharton

Hardly looking like a player who had not competed in 466 days, Tiger Woods ran off three straight birdies with a variety of shots and was tied for the lead in the Hero World Challenge at Nassau, Bahamas, as he approached the turn.

A pair of double bogeys over the final three holes ruined an otherwise impressive return, and Woods shot 40 on the back nine at Albany Golf Club and had to settle for a one-over 73. Only Justin Rose had a higher score in the 18-man field.

“It could have been something really good,” Woods said. “I got off to a nice, solid start and made a few mistakes there . ... But all in all, I feel pretty good. I’m looking forward to another three more days.”

Woods was nine shots behind J.B. Holmes, who opened with an eight-under 64 and had a one-shot lead over Hideki Matsuyama, with U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson at 66.

Indiana football Coach Kevin Wilson abruptly resigned Thursday, less than a week after the Hoosiers became bowl eligible for the second straight season. Defensive coordinator Tom Allen was named to replace him.

Athletic Director Fred Glass made the announcement during a hastily arranged news conference and cited “philosophical differences” with Wilson. There were reports that Wilson had pushed players to return from injury and Glass said the issue was looked into by a law firm hired by the university.

Wilson went 26-47 in six seasons in his first college head coaching job. In January, he agreed to a sixyear contract extension worth $15.3 million after leading the Hoosiers to their first bowl appearance since 2007.
