No. 6 Virginia falls at home to West Virginia
Esa Ahmad hit a tiebreaking three-pointer with 1:28 remaining Saturday and No. 25 West Virginia ended No. 6 Virginia’s 24-game home winning streak with a 66-57 victory at Charlottesville, Va.
Jevon Carter scored 11 points and Nathan Adrian had 10 for the Mountaineers (6-1), who scored 11 of the game’s last 13 points.
Darius Thompson scored 14 points to lead Virginia (7-1), but the Cavaliers never got into any kind of rhythm offensively.
West Virginia had a lot of do with that, forcing 14 turnovers and converting them into 18 points. Virginia scored just five points off eight Mountaineers turnovers.
Ahmad’s three-pointer was just the fourth of the game for West Virginia in 15 tries, but Tarik Phillip followed a miss by Virginia with an inside basket, making it 60-55, and Virginia ran out of time as the Mountaineers finished it off at the freethrow line. They were 16 for 19 from the stripe overall.
at No. 9 Baylor 76, No. 7 Xavier 61: Manu Lecomte scored 24 points and the Bears (8-0) took over in the second half to notch their third win over a top-10 opponent this season, a first in program history. Edmond Sumner had 19 points for the Musketeers (7-1).
at No. 4 Kansas 89, Stanford 74: Frank Mason III scored 20 points, Devonte Graham delivered an early three-point barrage and finished with 15, and the Jayhawks (7-1) pulled away late for their 44th straight win at Allen Fieldhouse. Reid Travis had a career-best 29 points and nine rebounds for the Cardinal (6-3).
at No. 2 Villanova 88, Saint Joseph’s 57: Josh Hart recorded his first career triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the Wildcats (8-0), who are poised to take over the No. 1 ranking with Kentucky’s loss to UCLA.
at No. 5 Duke 94, Maine 55: Luke Kennard scored a career-best 35 points and Jayson Tatum finished with 10 in his long-awaited debut for the Blue Devils (8-1). Tatum, one of Duke’s three injured five-star freshmen, had been out since suffering a sprained foot in October.
at No. 23 Oregon 128, Savannah State 59: Tyler Dorsey scored 29 points and the Ducks (7-2) shot 60% (54 for 90) in setting a school scoring record. Their previous high was 121 points against Portland in 1970. at Providence 63, No. 21 Rhode Island 60:
at No. 17 Wisconsin 90, Oklahoma 70: Nigel Hayes scored 28 points for the Badgers (7-2), who made eight of 14 three-point shots in the second half after trailing the Sooners (5-2) for the entire first half.
