Westbrook extends triple-double streak

-

OKLAHOMA CITY 101 NEW ORLEANS 92

Russell Westbrook became the first NBA player with five consecutive triple-doubles since Michael Jordan had seven straight in 1989, finishing with 28 points, 17 rebounds and 12 assists Sunday night to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 101-92 victory over the visiting New Orleans Pelicans.

The Thunder have won all five games during Westbrook’s streak. It was his 10th triple-double of the season and the 47th of his career.

Westbrook is still averaging a triple-double for the season — 31.0 points, 10.8 rebounds and 11.3 assists per game through 21 games. But he says he doesn’t worry about numbers.

“I just play, honestly,” he said. “I don’t want to get in a conversation of if I’m going to do it every night. I just go out and compete at a high level every night, like I’ve been doing since I’ve been in the NBA.”

Enes Kanter had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Victor Oladipo scored 15 points for the Thunder, who have recovered from a stretch of seven losses in nine games last month and are tied for fifth in the Western Conference with a 13-8 record.

“I just like to win, brother,” Westbrook said. “That’s the most important part. Making sure my guys are good, making sure everybody’s happy with their games, and making sure we win the game.”

Anthony Davis, the league’s leading scorer, had 37 points and 15 rebounds for New Orleans. Pelicans rookie Buddy Hield, who led Oklahoma to the Final Four last season, scored 16 points in his first game back in the state.
