Desmond, Eaton have new teams

- Associated press

One outfielder signs with Colorado for $70 million and the other is traded to Washington by the Chicago White Sox.

Free-agent closer Aroldis Chapman and the New York Yankees reached agreement on an $86-million, five-year deal Wednesday, a person familiar with the deal told the Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract was still pending a physical.

Chapman was acquired by the Yankees from the Cincinnati Reds last off-season and traded to the Chicago Cubs in late July.

Fox Sports first reported the agreement.

Desmond signs with Rockies

All-Star free-agent outfielder Ian Desmond and the Colorado Rockies have agreed to a $70-million, fiveyear contract.

Desmond hit .285 with 22 home runs and 86 runs batted in this year with the Texas Rangers, earning his first All-Star trip since 2012.

He played shortstop from 2011 to 2015 with the Washington Nationals and was shifted to the outfield by the Rangers. Colorado may move him to first base.

Eaton sent to D.C.

The Nationals acquired center fielder Adam Eaton from the Chicago White Sox for three young pitchers, including top prospect Lucas Giolito and hard-throwing Reynaldo Lopez, who was on the team’s postseason roster in 2016.

By putting Eaton in center field, the Nationals can move Trea Turner — runner-up this year for National League rookie of the year — back to shortstop, his natural position.

Davis dealt to Cubs

Closer Wade Davis was acquired by the Chicago Cubs from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for outfielder Jorge Soler.

Davis was 2-1 with 27 saves in 30 tries and a 1.87 earned-run average last season. He spent time on the disabled because of a forearm injury.

Soler hit .238 with 12 home runs and 31 RBIs in 86 games last season.

Deal is outlined

Reliever Marc Rzepczynski is guaranteed $11 million in his two-year contract with the Seattle Mariners, which was announced Saturday.

Rzepczynski was 1-0 with a 2.64 ERA in 70 games for Oakland and Washington this year.

Texas keeps Gomez

Carlos Gomez agreed to an $11.5-million, one-year contract to remain with the Rangers.

The outfielder, who was released by Houston in August after hitting .210 in 85 games, batted .284 in 33 games with the Rangers.

D’Backs get Rodney

Closer Fernando Rodney and the Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to a $2.75-million, one-year contract.

Rodney was an All-Star this year, saving 25 games in 28 chances with San Diego and Miami, which acquired him on June 30. He has 261 saves and a 3.69 ERA in 14 major league seasons.
