Jaguars hire Marrone, Coughlin

- Wire reports

The Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday hired Doug Marrone as coach, brought back Tom Coughlin in a front-office role and extended General Manager Dave Caldwell’s contract by two years.

Marrone replaces Gus Bradley, fired Dec. 18 after going 14-48 in three-plus seasons. Marrone was interim coach for the final two games of the Jaguars’ 3-13 season.

Coughlin, who was Jacksonville’s first coach and won two Super Bowls in 12 seasons with the New York Giants, will serve as executive vice president of football operations. He and Marrone, who also interviewed with the Rams and San Francisco, are expected to bring a more old-school vibe.

The Jaguars also interviewed Atlanta offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Mike Smith, New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Arizona offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin. Porter is charged

Former Pro Bowl linebacker and current Pittsburgh Steelers assistant coach Joey Porter was charged early Monday with assaulting a doorman at a Pittsburgh bar and a police officer who intervened.

Police said the incident occurred at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, hours after the Steelers’ 30-12 playoff victory over the Miami Dolphins.

According to a criminal complaint filed by police officer Paul Abel, Porter — who appeared to be intoxicated — grabbed the 5-foot-6, 145pound Abel by the arms and lifted him off the ground during the altercation, and grabbed his wrists “so tightly I could not pull them away from him, no matter how hard I tried,” Abel said.

Porter was charged with aggravated assault on Abel, simple assault on the doorman, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. Injury under review

The NFL is reviewing the concussion protocol conducted on Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore when he left the game at Pittsburgh after being hit on the chin by the Steelers’ Bud Dupree as he threw a pass.

The team said Moore was evaluated on the sideline by an independent neurological consultant and the team physician and was cleared to return to the game. He missed only one play. Moore said after the game that he wasn’t seriously hurt. Heat’s on Beckham

New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr., under the microscope last week for taking a one-day trip to Miami with some fellow receivers after the regular-season finale and before a playoff game at Green Bay, is alleged to have punched a hole in a wall outside his team’s locker room at Lambeau Field following the Packers’ 38-13 victory Sunday.

General Manager Jerry Reese said the Giants are investigating any potential vandalism and they would hold the appropriate party responsible for the damage. Coach Ben McAdoo said he became aware of the hole Monday. Beckham, who had a career-high three dropped passes in the game, was not in the locker room at team headquarters Monday. Etc.

Green Bay receiver Jordy Nelson will sit out midweek practices because of a rib injury suffered against the Giants, but Coach Mike McCarthy said he could play in Sunday’s playoff game at Dallas if he can practice Saturday . . . . Linebacker Justin Houston, who missed Kansas City’s last two games with a knee injury, and Chiefs rushing leader Spencer Ware, who missed the regular-season finale with a rib injury, are “good to go” for Sunday’s playoff game against Pittsburgh, Coach Andy Reid said . . . . The San Francisco 49ers interviewed Washington offensive coordinator Sean McVay for their head coaching job and Carolina assistant general manager Brandon Beane for their GM job.
