Querrey advances in Florida

Defending champion Sam Querrey reached the Delray Beach Open quarterfin­als in Florida by hitting 13 aces and winning 24 of 25 first-serve points in a 6-2, 6-3 victory over fellow American Jared Donaldson. Querrey will face seventh-seeded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, who beat Damir Dzumhur, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3. In other All-American action, Donald Young eliminated 19-year-old Taylor Fritz, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Top-seeded Angelique Kerber and Caroline Wozniacki reached the semifinals of the Dubai Tennis Championsh­ips in the United Arab Emirates. Kerber beat Ana Konjuh of Croatia, 6-3, 6-2. She will play seventh-seeded Elina Svitolina, who defeated American Lauren Davis, 6-0, 6-4. Wozniacki defeated American Catherine “Cici” Bellis, 6-3, 6-2.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released cornerback Alterraun Verner. Verner, 28, who played at UCLA, was with Tampa Bay from 2014 to 2016. Tampa Bay will save $6.5 million in salary cap room with the move . ... The Denver Broncos told offensive tackle Russell Okung they will not be picking up his option, which would have kept him with the team and guaranteed him $21 million . ... The New York Jets released right tackle Breno Giacomini and kicker Nick Folk. The moves will save the team $4.5 million for Giacomini and $3 million for Folk.

Josh Hamilton was back at Rangers spring training camp in Arizona on Thursday, and feeling confident after an examinatio­n in Texas showed no significan­t structural damage to his surgically repaired left knee. Hamilton said he was concerned when he felt a sudden pain when doing some running drills Tuesday.
