Missouri fires coach

Missouri fired basketball Coach Kim Anderson near the end of a third straight disappoint­ing season. Anderson, a former Tigers player and assistant coach, went 26-67, including 723 this season. The last-place Tigers’ 2-16 Southeaste­rn Conference mark tied a league record for losses.

New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey, making his first start since major surgery last July, threw a perfect first inning in his spring training debut against St. Louis but gave up three runs in the second at Port St. Lucie, Fla. The former ace said “it's only a matter of time” before he regains form. Harvey, who had elbow ligament surgery in 2013, had his 2016 season cut short by thoracic outlet syndrome, an ailment in the upper torso.

Before the game, former All-Star closer Trevor Rosenthal’s bid to win a spot in St. Louis’ rotation hit a snag when he was scratched from his scheduled start Monday because of muscle tightness in his right side.

Former Lakers guard Jose Calderon was claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Hawks. The Lakers bought out Calderon’s contract last Monday, and two days later the 12year NBA veteran was signed and quickly released by Golden State.

A transgende­r boy who won a girls’ wrestling state title in Texas says he would compete against boys if allowed and is taking lower doses of testostero­ne to try to be fair to opponents. Mack Beggs, 17, said in an interview with ESPN that he competes against girls only because the state’s governing body for high school sports requires him to wrestle under the gender listed on his birth certificat­e.

In skiing, Sofia Goggia of Italy again edged American Lindsey Vonn at a World Cup event, winning a super-G on the 2018 Olympic course at Jeongseon, South Korea, a day after she won a downhill . ... Marcel Hirscher, who wrapped up a record sixth straight men’s overall World Cup title Saturday, clinched his fourth slalom title with a fourth-place finish in the season’s penultimat­e race at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. Austrian compatriot Michael Matt won the race.

Olympic champion and “The Bachelor” contestant Michelle Carter won the shotput at the USA Track & Field Indoor Championsh­ips in Albuquerqu­e with a mark of 62 feet 51⁄4 inches. Vashti Cunningham, 19-yearold daughter of former NFL quarterbac­k Randall Cunningham, cleared 6-5 to defend her high jump title.

In boxing, Keith Thurman handed Danny Garcia his first loss as a pro, taking a split decision in a welterweig­ht title unificatio­n bout Saturday at Barclays Center in New York to add the World Boxing Council belt to his World Boxing Assn. championsh­ip. Thurman is 28-0, Garcia 33-1.
