Flyers’ goalie is hospitalized
Philadelphia Flyers goalie Michael Neuvirth was hospitalized after he collapsed while tending goal Saturday night against the New Jersey Devils. Neuvirth left the game after collapsing in the crease 71⁄2 minutes into the game. He was carted off the ice on a stretcher and later taken to Pennsylvania Hospital, where he was “awake and alert,” Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said. Anthony Stolarz replaced Neuvirth in goal and the Flyers won the game, 3-0.
Johanna Konta lofted a lob off the baseline for a winner on championship point, waited for replay to confirm the call and even then hesitated to celebrate the biggest title of her 11-year career. Seeded 10th, Konta was an unlikely champion, but the Australian-born Briton defeated Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-3 in Saturday’s final at the Miami Open in Key Biscayne, Fla.
Chase Elliott had spent lap after lap pursuing race leader Christopher Bell, trying to find or create a way around him. Then Elliott grabbed the lead when Bell wiggled with 17 laps to go and held off teammate Johnny Sauter to win the NASCAR truck race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway. Sauter finished second, followed by Bell, rookie Noah Gragson and Ty Dillon.
USC freshman linebacker Tayler Katoa will require surgery after injuring the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during practice on Thursday. He is expected to miss the upcoming season. — Zach Helfand
Two-time NBA scoring champion Tracy McGrady, Kansas coach Bill Self, late former Chicago Bulls executive Jerry Krause and former Connecticut star Rebecca Lobo are part of this year’s Basketball Hall of Fame class. The Hall of Fame announced the 11-person class Saturday.
Others in the class include former NBA and ABA star George McGinnis and Notre Dame women’s coach Muffet McGraw.
