FIRST-ROUND GLANCE

-

AFTER A FALL Wednesday, a disappointed Dustin Johnson was unable to begin his round Thursday.

LEADER: Charley Hoffman had a seven-under 65, which was roughly 10 shots better than the average score.

LEAD: Hoffman’s four-shot lead was the largest for the first round of the Masters since 1955, when Jack Burke Jr. shot a 67 and also led by four. However, Burke followed that round with a 76.

PAR-BREAKERS: Only 11 players broke par, the fewest since 2007.

HEARTBREAKER: Dustin Johnson, the No. 1 player in the world and the Masters favorite, had to withdraw because of a back injury. It was the first time the No. 1 player had to withdraw on the eve of a major.

SPIETH’S SPIRAL: Jordan Spieth had a quadruple-bogey nine on the 15th hole, the highest score of his career. He shot par or better in his first nine rounds at the Masters, and shot over par his last four rounds.

KEY STATISTIC: No one has come from more than seven shots behind after the first round to win the Masters. Only 18 players were within seven shots of Hoffman.

NOTEWORTHY: Hoffman became the first player since Loren Roberts in 2000 to make birdie on all four of the par threes.

QUOTEWORTHY: “I don’t feel there’s any chance of competing.” — Dustin Johnson after withdrawing.
