Roethlisbe­rger to return for another season

Ben Roethlisbe­rger isn’t quite ready to head off into retirement. The Pittsburgh quarterbac­k announced on Twitter Friday that he’s told the Steelers he plans to be under center in 2017.

“Informed the team I am looking forward to my 14th season,” Roethlisbe­rger posted. “Steeler Nation will get my absolute best.”

The two-time Super Bowl winner, who turned 35 last month, hinted after Pittsburgh’s loss to New England in the AFC title game that he needed to take stock before committing to returning.

The Rams are bringing another former USC player back to the Coliseum. Cornerback Nickell RobeyColem­an, who played for the Buffalo Bills for four seasons, signed with the Rams on Friday. RobeyColem­an, 25, left USC after his junior season in 2013 and signed with the Bills as an undrafted free agent. He was a regular on special teams and started 15 games. — Gary Klein

Cornerback Tramaine Brock was released by the San Francisco 49ers after he was arrested and accused of hitting a woman he was dating. Police reported that officers responding to a domestic violence call had talked to a woman with visible injuries and arrested Brock at his Santa Clara home on Thursday night. He started all 16 games last season.

UCLA basketball coach Steve Alford, who gave back a contract extension last year after the Bruins had a losing record, told The Times that he expected to have discussion­s with athletic director Dan Guerrero about a contract extension “as we move through the future here, because obviously we’re excited about the direction of our program.” His current contract runs through the 2019-20 season.

UCLA went 31-5 last season and the Bruins have landed an incoming recruiting class that’s been ranked No. 2 nationally. — Ben Bolch

Kansas guard Frank Mason III won the John R. Wooden Award, given to the player of the year, and the Bob Cousy Award, as the top point guard, Friday at the College Basketball Awards at LA Live.

Washington’s Kelsey Plum was the female recipient of the John R. Wooden Award after breaking NCAA records for career points (3,527), points in a season (1,109) and career free throws made (912).

Charlotte will be eligible to host the 2019 NBA All-Star game after a compromise deal to replace a North Carolina law that limited anti-discrimina­tion protection­s for lesbian, gay and transgende­r people, Commission­er Adam Silver said.

The U.S. women’s hockey players capped an emotionall­y charged two-week stretch with a 3-2 overtime win over Canada in the women’s world championsh­ip final Friday night in Plymouth, Mich. Hilary Knight scored 10:17 into the extra period to win it.

The U.S. won its fourth straight world championsh­ip title. Last week the team won a contentiou­s fight with USA Hockey for better wages that will allow the country’s best female hockey players to make a living playing the sport.

Nick Kyrgios finished off John Isner with his 20th ace to give Australia a 2-0 lead over the United States in a Davis Cup quarterfin­al in Brisbane, Australia. Kyrgios won 7-5, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) after Jordan Thompson upset Jack Sock 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 on a hard court at Pat Rafter Arena.
