Rockets’ Nene is out for rest of season

Nene will not play again this season after suffering a thigh injury in Sunday’s victory over the San Antonio Spurs, the Houston Rockets announced.

The veteran backup center was injured in the first quarter of the Rockets’ 125-104 Game 4 win and and did not return. The team said it was reviewing treatment options for the torn adductor muscle in his left thigh.

The 6-foot-11 Nene, in his first season with the Rockets, averaged 10 points and 4.7 rebounds in nine playoff games. He was the star of Game 4 in Houston’s first-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder when he tied an NBA record by making all 12 of his shots and scoring a career playoff-high 28 points.

The Western Conference semifinal series is tied at 2-2 going into Game 5 on Tuesday night at San Antonio.

The triple-murder trial for former Tampa Bay Rays prospect Brandon Martin is scheduled to start Sept. 25 in Riverside County Superior Court. Martin, a supplement­al first-round draft pick of the Rays in June 2011, is charged with bludgeonin­g his father and two other men to death with a baseball bat in September 2015. Martin pleaded not guilty. During a hearing last week, Judge Michael B. Donner found that Martin, a promising shortstop from Corona Santiago High who drew comparison­s to Derek Jeter, “has no financial resources whatsoever” and doesn’t have the ability to pay for defense counsel without public assistance.

A settlement is in the works in a lawsuit against Chad Curtis, a former Angels outfielder who is serving time in a Michigan prison for criminal sexual conduct. Curtis, who played for six major league teams, is being sued by four young women who attended Lakewood High in western Michigan, where he worked after retiring from baseball. The women say they were inappropri­ately touched by Curtis in the weight room.

Authoritie­s in Miami said that New York Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson was charged with resisting arrest and obstructio­n of justice after sparring with officials who asked him to leave a Miami music festival.

High school seniors can now sign football letters of intent in December in addition to the traditiona­l signing period in February. The early signing period is set for Dec. 20-22, 2017.
