Death Valley resort to reopen as Oasis

- — Mary Forgione

When Furnace Creek Resort reopens in late fall, it will have a new name and a new look. The resort will be called the Oasis at Death Valley. Its two properties, the 66-room Inn at Furnace Creek, will become the Inn at Death Valley, and the 224room Ranch at Furnace Creek becomes the Ranch at Death Valley. Why the name changes? “At the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Glacier, the name of the park is in the name of the lodge,” said Betsy O’Rourke, chief marketing officer at resort operator Xanterra Parks & Resorts. The $50-million makeover will add new luxury casitas to the Inn and a new town hall and square to the Ranch. The renovated inn, a AAA four-diamond property, usually closes from Mother’s Day until October but now will be open year round.
