CRACKDOWN ON PRIDE RALLY
A Turkish plainclothes police officer kicks an activist who tried to take part in a gay pride parade in Istanbul after the city’s governor banned all such observances for the third year in a row. Police established checkpoints and used tear gas to disperse the crowds that tried to gather in and around Istanbul’s central Taksim Square on Sunday. But at least a hundred protesters assembled in a nearby neighborhood, beating drums and chanting slogans such as, “Don’t be quiet, shout out, gays exist!” Turkey’s official Anadolu news agency said an estimated 20 people were detained; march organizers put the figure at more than 40.
