Sonoma win ends Harvick’s drought
Kevin Harvick earned his first NASCAR Cup win this season with a dominating run Sunday on the road course at Sonoma Raceway.
The former NASCAR champion came to Sonoma winless in 20 races since Kansas last fall and has been overshadowed this year by the circuit’s young stars. But at a track where experience and ability can separate the field, Harvick and several other veterans led the way.
It was the first win on the winding California wine country course in 17 tries for the Bakersfield driver. Clint Bowyer finished second and Brad Keselowski was third as Ford cars went 1-2-3. It was Ford’s seventh victory this season.
Martin Truex Jr. won the first stage, his series-leading 11th stage victory, and Jimmie Johnson won the second stage. Points leader Kyle Larson was never a factor, finishing 26th.
Scott Dixon held off Josef Newgarden after a restart with eight laps to go to win the IndyCar series race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver’s first win since Watkins Glen in September was the 41st of his career, one shy of Michael Andretti for third in IndyCar history.
Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at Baku for his fifth career Formula One win. Valtteri Bottas was second in a Mercedes. Sebastian Vettel steered his Ferrari to fourth place to extend his championship points lead over Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, who was a close fifth.
Steve Torrence raced to his fourth top-fuel victory of the season, winning at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. Jack Beckman won in funny car, Bo Butner in pro stock and L.E. Tonglet in pro stock motorcycle.
