Newton is throwing again

Quarterbac­k Cam Newton threw his first passes since surgery in March for a partially torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder, the Carolina Panthers announced on Twitter. The NFL’s most valuable player in 2015 is on schedule to participat­e in the team’s training camp in July and barring setbacks should be ready for the start of the season. The Panthers released a short black-and-white video of Newton throwing in the team’s locker room.

Defensive tackle Nick Fairley won’t be playing for the New Orleans Saints in 2017 and perhaps beyond. The Saints have placed Fairley, 29, on their reserve list because of a non-football illness designatio­n, general manager Mickey Loomis said. Fairley has been visiting heart specialist­s recently because of symptoms related to an enlarged heart.

Former Green Bay Packers running back Ahman Green was charged with felony child abuse after his 15-year-old daughter told police he punched her in the face. Green, 40, also is charged with disorderly conduct in the incident late Sunday in the Green Bay suburb of Ledgeview, Wis. According to a criminal complaint, Green’s daughter told police that he struck her in the face in a dispute over getting her to do the dishes . ... An Arizona judge ordered Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Michael Floyd to serve one day in jail for failing alcohol tests that he blamed on a type of fermented tea. The hearing was meant to give Floyd a chance to make his case regarding the failed alcohol tests and another appearance he missed this month, which stemmed from a 2016 drunken driving arrest in which Scottsdale police say they found the then-Arizona Cardinals player passed out behind the wheel.

The NCAA is conducting an “ongoing, pending investigat­ion” into Baylor University in the wake of a sexual assault scandal that led to the firing of football coach Art Briles and the departure of the school president, the school’s lawyers confirmed in a federal court filing.

The Kings extended qualifying offers to nine restricted free agents, meeting the deadline for teams to make such offers. That group was comprised of Justin Auger, Jonny Brodzinski, Andrew Crescenzi, Kevin Gravel, Paul LaDue, Zach Leslie, Kurtis MacDermid, Michael Mersch and Nick Shore. They did not give qualifying offers to Patrick Bjorkstran­d or Joel Lowry, son of incoming assistant Dave Lowry, making those players unrestrict­ed free agents. The Ducks did not extend a qualifying offer to Long Beach native Emerson Etem, who was slowed by a knee injury, or Ryan Faragher. They made offers to Kevin Boyle, Jaycob Megna, Nick Sorensen and Max Gortz . ... The Ducks signed defenseman Korbinian Holzer toa two-year contract extension.

The Dallas Stars acquired veteran defenseman Marc Methot from the Vegas Golden Knights for goaltendin­g prospect Dylan Ferguson and a 2020 second-round pick . ... The Edmonton Oilers signed forward Zack Kassian to a three-year contract extension. The St. Louis Blues did not extend a qualifying offer to Nail Yakupov, making the No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft an unrestrict­ed free agent.

Two-time major champion John Daly has withdrawn from the U.S. Senior Open because of a shoulder injury. The tournament begins Thursday at Salem Country Club in Massachuse­tts . ... Twotime major champion So Yeon Ryu of South Korea has a new title: No. 1 in the world. Ryu, 26, became the third player this year to rise to No. 1 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Ranking with her victory in the Walmart NW Arkansas Championsh­ip . ... The fabric envelope of a hot-air blimp ripped and caused it to crash near the U.S. Open at Erin Hills in Wisconsin, officials said. The preliminar­y report from the National Transporta­tion Safety Board said that the airship was returning to the Erin airport June 15 when the accident happened.

A 23-year-old man was arrested in Columbia, Mo., after smashing through two gates and driving onto the basketball court at the University of Missouri over the weekend, causing an estimated $100,000 in damage. The suspect is a December 2016 university graduate.
