It’s a stunner Down Under
Australian challenger gets the welterweight title in a stunning unanimous decision.
Unbeaten Horn wins unanimous decision over Pacquiao.
BRISBANE, Australia — Manny Pacquiao lost his World Boxing Organization welterweight world title to Jeff Horn in a stunning, unanimous decision in a Sunday afternoon bout billed as the “Battle of Brisbane” in front of more than 50,000 people.
The 11-time world champion entered the fight at Suncorp Stadium as a big favorite but got more than he bargained for against the 29year-old former teacher. Still, Pacquiao dominated the later rounds and the result could have gone his way.
Pacquiao’s longtime trainer, Freddie Roach, predicted the fight would be short and sweet but Horn — unbeaten in his 17 previous fights — applied pressure by winning some of the early rounds and Pacquiao needed treatment during the sixth and seventh rounds for a cut on the top of his head that resulted from a clash of heads.
The judges scored the fight 117-111, 115-113 and 115-113. Horn immediately called out Floyd Mayweather Jr., declaring himself “no joke.”
Roach had said earlier in the week that he'd think about advising Pacquiao to retire if he lost the fight, but that would depend on how he fought. Pacquiao (59-7-2, 38 knockouts) was defending the WBO title he won on points against Jessie Vargas in November.
In the undercard, David Toussaint, a middleweight from Canberra, Australia, outboxed Shane Mosley Jr. to win an eight-round split decision.
Toussaint (11-0, eight KOs) won on two of the three scorecards over Pomona’s Mosley (10-2, seven KOs). The scores were 77-76 and 7776 for Toussaint, 77-75 for Mosley. Mosley mounted a rally in the seventh and eighth rounds, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the lead Toussaint had built earlier.
“I walked him down,” Mosley said. “I walked down a power puncher. I was landing the straight right all day. I could tell he was getting tired. He chose to box instead of fight the last two rounds. I won that fight.”
Also, Jerwin Ancajas of the Philippines stopped Teiru Kinoshita of Japan in the seventh round to win the IBF junior-bantamweight title.
