Ledecky wins third gold at worlds

-

Katie Ledecky breezed to her third gold medal of the swimming world championships in Budapest, Hungary, capturing the 1,500-meter freestyle by more than half the length of the pool.

Ledecky touched in 15 minutes, 31.82 seconds — more than six seconds off her world-record pace from the championships in Kazan two years ago, but clearly conserving energy for her second race of the night. She only had a 49-minute break before returning to the pool for the semifinals of the 200 free.

Lilly King of the United States, Kylie Masse of Canada and Adam Peaty of Britain all set world records.

King eclipsed the mark in the 100-meter breaststroke, again beating Russian rival Yulia Efimova with a time of 1:04.13 seconds.

Masse took down a mark from the rubber-suit era when she won the women’s 100 backstroke in 51.10.

Peaty set a pair of marks in the 50 breaststroke, a non-Olympic event. He went 26.10 in the morning preliminaries, shaving 0.32 seconds off the standard he set two years ago in Kazan, Russia.

He went even faster during the evening semifinals, touching in 25.95.

Former Dallas Cowboys receiver Lucky Whitehead’s identity was falsely used in a shoplifting arrest, police in his home state of Virginia said. Prince William County police said they were confident the man charged in a case involving $40 worth of stolen food and drink from a convenience store in June wasn’t Whitehead.

The Cowboys released him Monday after reports that he was arrested and subsequently cited for missing a court hearing.

Gary Kubiak is returning to the Denver Broncos in a scouting capacity seven months after stepping down as their head coach over health concerns. Kubiak will serve as a senior personnel advisor, scouting college and pro players.

Receiver Andrew Hawkins said he is retiring from the NFL and donating his brain to research. The six-year NFL veteran signed with the New England Patriots in May as a free agent, but he said that his body isn’t responding as he prepared for training camp.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made Brandon Linder one of the NFL’s highest-paid centers, signing him to a five-year contract extension worth a little more than $50 million, according to a person familiar with negotiations.
