Jhonat­tan Ve­gas suc­cess­fully de­fended his RBC Cana­dian Open ti­tle at Glen Abbey in Oakville, beat­ing Charley Hoff­man with a birdie on the first hole of a play­off.

Ve­gas’ ap­proach from the left bunker in the play­off on the par-five 18th hit the grass just above the sand lip and went through the green. The 32-year-old Venezue­lan chipped to a foot and won when Hoff­man’s birdie try from the back bunker slid past the hole. Ve­gas closed with a seven-un­der 65 to match Hoff­man at 21-un­der 267. Hoff­man birdied the 18th for a 68. Ian Poul­ter was a stroke back af­ter a 64.

Bern­hard Langer won the Se­nior Bri­tish Open in rain and wind at Royal Porth­cawl in Brid­gend, Wales, for his record-ex­tend­ing 10th se­nior ma­jor ti­tle and fifth in the last 10. The 59-year-old Ger­man star closed with an even-par 72 to fin­ish at four-un­der 280 and beat Corey Pavin by three strokes . ... Mi Hyang Lee won the Ladies Scot­tish Open in Irvine for her sec­ond LPGA Tour ti­tle. Lee shot a six-un­der 66 to fin­ish at six-un­der 282, one shot ahead of Hall of Famer Kar­rie Webb and Mi Jung Hur.

Lee May, an All-Star slug­ger who put up 100-RBI sea­sons for three dif­fer­ent teams, died. He was 74.

New Eng­land Pa­tri­ots de­fen­sive end/ line­backer Rob Ninkovich re­tired.

John Is­ner rode an over­pow­er­ing ser­vice game to his fourth BB&T At­lanta Open ti­tle, beat­ing Ryan Har­ri­son 7-6 (6), 7-6 (7) . ... Ka­te­rina Sini­akova de­feated Caro­line Woz­ni­acki, who strug­gled with a wrist in­jury, in the Swedish Open fi­nal 6-3, 6-4 in Bas­tad.

Stel­lar Wind won the Cle­ment L. Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar, a 11⁄16-mile race run on a slightly over­cast but oth­er­wise ideal af­ter­noon in front of an en­thu­si­as­tic crowd of 12,338. As part of the sched­ule of the “Win and You’re In” Chal­lenge se­ries races, the vic­tory cap­tured a $300,000 purse and qual­i­fies the 5-year-old for the $2-mil­lion Longines Breed­ers’ Cup Distaff at Del Mar on Nov. 3. Stel­lar Wind’s fi­nal time was 1:43.92 and her win for trainer John Sadler and jockey Vic­tor Espinoza cashed in at $3.

Stel­lar Wind, who won the same event last year, broke out well on the out­side, coasted slightly be­hind Vale Dori of Ar­gentina for much of the race, took a short lead in the stretch and held off Vale Dori in the fi­nal six­teenth by a neck. — Ivan Carter
