Cana­dian teenager De­nis Shapo­valov up­set top-seeded Rafael Nadal 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the third round of the Rogers Cup at Mon­treal. The 18-yearold Shapo­valov ad­vanced to a quar­ter­fi­nal meet­ing Friday night with France’s Adrian Man­nar­ino, who de­feated Hyeon Chung of South Korea 6-3, 6-3. Roger Fed­erer over­came a weak first set to post a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 vic­tory over Spa­niard David Fer­rer and will face 12th-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain, who out­lasted French­man Gael Mon­fils 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2) . ... Karolina Pliskova ad­vanced to the quar­ter­fi­nals at the women’s Rogers Cup at Toronto when Ja­panese qual­i­fier Naomi Osaka was forced to re­tire. The world’s topranked player moved on with a 6-2, 6-7 (4), 1-0 vic­tory when Osaka bowed out be­cause of an ab­dom­i­nal in­jury. In a later match, fifth-seeded Elina Svi­tolina of Ukraine cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 vic­tory over ninth-seeded Venus Wil­liams.

Duke bas­ket­ball coach Mike Krzyzewski will have a to­tal knee re­place­ment surgery, lead­ing the Blue Devils to can­cel this month's ex­hi­bi­tion trip to the Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic. The school an­nounced that the Hall of Fame coach will have the pro­ce­dure this weekend on his right leg at the univer­sity hos­pi­tal in Durham. Krzyzewski, 70, will be re­leased within three days to be­gin a re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion pro­gram at Duke.

Cen­tral Florida ex­tended the con­tract of bas­ket­ball coach Johnny Dawkins af­ter a suc­cess­ful first sea­son. The school said that Dawkins’ cur­rent six-year con­tract has been ex­tended by a year through 2023. Last sea­son, Dawkins guided the Knights to a 24-12 record and an ap­pear­ance in the NIT Fi­nal Four. UCF dou­bled its win to­tal from the pre­vi­ous sea­son.

Wis­con­sin se­nior line­backer Jack Cichy will sit out the sea­son af­ter suf­fer­ing a knee in­jury. Coach Paul Chryst said that Cichy, a cap­tain and former walk-on, tore an an­te­rior cru­ci­ate lig­a­ment dur­ing prac­tice Tues­day. Cichy had 60 tack­les and 1.5 sacks last sea­son de­spite sit­ting out the fi­nal seven games . ... Nebraska’s Jaevon McQuitty, a promis­ing fresh­man re­ceiver, suf­fered a sea­son-end­ing knee in­jury, coach Mike Ri­ley an­nounced. McQuitty, the top-ranked high school player in Mis­souri last sea­son, was in­jured dur­ing a block­ing drill, Ri­ley said.

NCAA mem­ber schools will be re­quired to pro­vide yearly sex­ual vi­o­lence ed­u­ca­tion for all col­lege ath­letes, coaches and ath­let­ics ad­min­is­tra­tors un­der a pol­icy an­nounced by the or­ga­ni­za­tion's board of gov­er­nors. Cam­pus lead­ers such as ath­letic di­rec­tors, school pres­i­dents and Ti­tle IX co­or­di­na­tors will be re­quired to at­test that ath­letes, coaches and ad­min­is­tra­tors have been ed­u­cated on sex­ual vi­o­lence.

The Seattle Storm fired Jenny Boucek and pro­moted as­sis­tant Gary Klop­pen­burg to in­terim coach for the re­main­der of the sea­son. The Storm have lost four con­sec­u­tive games and are fight­ing to make the WNBA play­offs. Klop­pen­burg last was a head coach at Tulsa in 2012-13.

A high school foot­ball player lift­ing a large log with team­mates as part of a Navy SEALs-style drill was hit in the head by the log and died in Farmingville, N.Y., rais­ing ques­tions about adapt­ing such mil­i­tary train­ing to young ath­letes. Joshua Mileto ,a 16 year-old Sachem East High ju­nior, and about five of his team­mates were car­ry­ing the log over­head when the ac­ci­dent hap­pened at a pre­sea­son ex­er­cise camp su­per­vised by a half-dozen coaches, Suf­folk County po­lice said. The 5-foot-6, 134-pound wide re­ceiver and de­fen­sive back later was de­clared dead at a hos­pi­tal.
