Smith wins U.S. gymnastics title

Embracing the role of heavy favorite at the U.S. women’s gymnastics championsh­ips in Anaheim, 17-yearold Ragan Smith pulled away from the field to claim her first national title. Smith posted an all-around score of 115.250 at Honda Center, more than three points clear of Jordan Chiles in second place and Riley McCusker in third. Yul Moldauer won the men’s all-around title on Saturday.

Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza of Spain needed only 56 minutes to defeat Simona Halep 6-1, 6-0 and win the Western & Southern Open, denying the Romanian yet another chance to move up to No. 1 in the WTA rankings. It was the third time this year Halep was a win away from becoming No. 1. The victory at Mason, Ohio, outside Cincinnati, was Muguruza’s first on U.S. soil.

On the men’s side, seventhsee­ded Grigor Dimitrov beat Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 7-5 for his first ATP Tour Masters title, emerging from a bracket decimated by injuries to top players including Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and defending champion Marin Cilic. The women’s bracket was missing Serena Williams, who is pregnant, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova.

Will Power won the IndyCar race in Long Pond, Pa., masterfull­y protecting the inside line to block Penske Racing teammate Josef Newgarden from making a decisive pass over the final 10 laps at Pocono Raceway. Power, the 2014 series champion, earned his third win of the season, and second at Pocono in two years, to inch within 42 points of season leader Newgarden with three races left.

Top qualifier Leah Pritchett won the top-fuel title at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals in Brainerd, Minn. Alexis DeJoria won in funny car, Tanner Gray in pro stock and Jerry Savoie in pro stock motorcycle.

Velichko Cholakov, a former European champion who was part of the Bulgarian weightlift­ing team withdrawn from the 2008 Beijing Olympics after a doping scandal, died at age 35. Cause of death was not revealed, but local media reports said he had been suffering from heart problems.
