Germany romps

-

Germany roared back to its best in a 6-0 demolition of Norway and England also closed in on World Cup qualification, rallying for a 2-1 victory over Slovakia.

An early Marcus Rashford blunder put England on the back foot but the 19-year-old forward made amends by scoring the winner to put his team five points clear in Europe Group F with two rounds remaining.

Germany had a much easier time in Stuttgart.

Coach Joachim Loew had been looking for a reaction from his players after a fortunate 2-1 win over the Czech Republic on Friday, and Norway paid the price as the defending champions delivered a statement.

Timo Werner scored two goals as Germany moved five points clear of Northern Ireland.

Steve Torrence won for the first time in the U.S. Nationals at Clermont, Ind., notching the 14th Top Fuel victory of his NHRA career.

Torrence had a 3.757-second pass at 322.96 mph in his dragster to beat Kebin Kinsley for his seventh win of the season, clinching the No. 1 seeding heading into the Countdown to the Championship, the NHRA playoffs.

J.R. Todd (funny car), Drew Skillman (pro stock) and Hector Arana Jr. (pro stock motorcycle) also were winners.

Sporting Chance won the $350,000 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga, giving Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas a record eighth victory in the Grade 1 race two days after his 82nd birthday.

Lukas’ previous victory in the race came four years ago for the same owners, Robert Baker and William Mack, when Strong Mandate won by 93⁄4 lengths. Sporting Chance’s margin of victory was a neck.
