Cavs’ Thomas to sit out start of season

Isaiah Thomas beamed as he held up his new No. 3 Cavaliers jersey for the first time, but there’s no telling when he’ll wear it in a game.

Cleveland’s newest basketball star chose not to share much information about a hip injury that ended his playoff run last season and will sideline him for the start of this season — and probably a lot longer.

At his introductory news conference, Thomas deferred specific questions about his hip to new Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman, who said the team has a rehab plan in place for the All-Star point guard. The only glimpse about Thomas’ timetable came when Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue said, “Isaiah’s not going to be starting the season.”

Sugar Ramos, the Cuban featherweight champion whose fists led to two ring deaths has died in Mexico City. He was 75. He died Sunday from cancer complications, the World Boxing Council said.

Ramos was best known for his 1963 fight at Dodger Stadium with Davey Moore in which he won the featherweight title for the first time. It was the only fight card held at the ballpark, and it was deadly. Ramos had been battered by the champion in early rounds but came back to stop him in the 10th. Moore left the ring on his own but lost consciousness in his dressing room and slipped into a coma.

He died two days later, sparking an outcry about the safety of boxing and prompting then-California Gov. Pat Brown to call for the sport to be banned.

Five years earlier in Cuba Ramos had stopped a fighter named Jose Blanco, who also died.

Ramos, whose real name was Ultiminio Ramos, lived in Mexico after fleeing Cuba. Ramos, who started boxing professionally at age 15, retired in 1972 with a record of 55-7-4 with 40 knockouts.
