First-division matches are canceled in Mexico

- Wire reports

Mexico’s soccer federation canceled all first-division games this weekend because stadiums are being used as relief centers after the country’s magnitude 7.1 earthquake on Tuesday.

The federation announced Wednesday that there would be no games in the 10th round of the Apertura tournament or any other professional competition, including the women’s league.

The postponed league games will be played in mid-October, including the derby between Chivas and America.

Ghana-born forward Latif Blessing scored midway through the first half, Daniel Salloi added a goal in the second half and Sporting Kansas City held on to beat the New York Red Bulls 2-1 in Kansas City, Kan., for its fourth U.S. Open Cup title. The fast-paced match featured plenty of chances by both Major League Soccer clubs, but it was Blessing’s header in the 25th minute that put his team ahead to stay in the country’s oldest ongoing club tournament.

Josh Sargent, a 17-year-old forward who has starred on U.S. youth teams, agreed to sign with Werder Bremen. The German Bundesliga team said Sargent will sign a professional contract on Feb. 20, his 18th birthday.

The coach of the England women’s team was fired over “inappropriate and unacceptable behavior” involving his relationship with players in his previous job. Mark Sampson, who led England to third place at the 2015 World Cup, was dismissed after the Football Association leadership became aware of the full extent of an investigation into his conduct at Bristol’s Women’s Super League club.
