Cal’s Robertson is out for the season

California receiver Demetris Robertson will miss the rest of the season with a lower-body injury.

Robertson said on Twitter that he had surgery to repair an injury that bothered him last season. The school confirmed the surgery on Sunday and said that Robertson will miss the remainder of the season.

Robertson had seven catches for 70 yards and two runs for 40 yards and a touchdown in two games this season. Robertson had 50 catches for 767 yards and seven touchdowns last season as a freshman for the Golden Bears.

Cal (3-2) has lost two straight games following a 3-0 start.

Alabama’s big win over Mississipp­i didn’t keep Clemson from cutting into its lead in the Associated Press college football poll.

The defending national champion Tigers more than doubled their number of first-place votes after their 31-17 win over then-No. 12 Virginia Tech. Clemson lost ground a week ago after struggling for three quarters against Boston College, but its sharp performanc­e against the Hokies took the Tigers from eight to 17 firstplace votes Sunday.

The Tide went from 52 firstplace votes last week to 44 despite their 66-3 rout of the Rebels.

The top four teams remained the same. Following Alabama and Clemson are Oklahoma, which lost the first-place vote it got last week, and Penn State.

USC’s 30-27 loss at Washington State made room for Georgia to take over at No. 5 after its 41-0 win over Tennessee. Washington, Michigan, TCU, Wisconsin and Ohio State rounded out the top 10, while the Trojans slipped to 14th.

Texas El Paso football coach Sean Kugler has resigned after a 0-5 start. Kugler stepped down Sunday, a day after the Miners’ 3521 loss at Army.

Hockey broadcaste­r Dave Strader has died after battling bile duct cancer for more than a year. He was 62.
