Tennessee opts for new QB

-

Tennessee redshirt freshman quarterback Jarrett Guarantano will make his first career start in place of Quinten Dormady this week as the Volunteers seek to bounce back from their first shutout loss since 1994.

Coach Butch Jones said Wednesday that Guarantano would get the starting nod Saturday when Tennessee (3-2 overall, 0-2 Southeastern Conference) hosts South Carolina (4-2, 2-2).

Guarantano has completed 12 of 24 passes for 54 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions while backing up Dormady. He is more mobile than Dormady, though Guarantano has rushed for only six net yards in 10 carries.

Dormady has had six passes intercepted and lost two fumbles in Tennessee’s last four games. The Volunteers are coming off a bye week after losing 41-0 to No. 4 Georgia on Sept. 30.

Troy is upset

Backup running back Tra Minter had 104 total yards, South Alabama’s defense and special teams forced four turnovers, and the Jaguars upset Troy 19-8 in Troy, Ala. South Alabama (2-4, 1-1 Sun Belt) took a 19-0 lead early in the fourth quarter on Gavin Patterson’s 47yard field goal. Troy (4-2, 1-1) was playing for the first time since its 24-21 victory over Louisiana State on Sept. 30.
