Koepka takes one-shot lead at HSBC Champions

U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka turned a sure birdie into a bogey and then turned a certain bogey into an unlikely birdie. It added up to an eight-under 64 and a one-shot lead after the opening round of the HSBC Champions in Shanghai.

“Any time you can get off to a good start and be close to the lead or have the lead, that’s what you want,” Koepka said.

He had a one-shot lead over Kiradech Aphibarnra­t of Thailand, who dressed in black in honor of the five-day funeral that began at home for King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Gavin Green also opened with a 65, while Patrick Reed and Haydn Porteous of South Africa were another shot back.

Matt Kuchar and Justin Rose were in the group at 67, while Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson were among those at 68.

Defending champion Hideki Matsuyama opened with a 74.

Andrew Landry is back on the PGA Tour and off to a good start while trying to make the most of his second opportunit­y. Landry and J.J. Spaun are among five players who shot a six-under 66 to share the lead after the opening round of the Sanderson Farms Championsh­ip at Jackson, Miss.

Venus Williams reached the semifinals at the WTA Finals in Singapore by beating Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza 7-5, 6-4. The 37-year-old Williams advanced from the White Group along with Karolina Pliskova, who lost to French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-1 . ... Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro both eased into the Swiss Indoors quarterfin­als by beating French opponents in straight sets. Topseeded Federer cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over 40th-ranked Benoit Paire in 57 minutes. Fourth-seeded Del Potro, a two-time Basel champion, beat Julien Benneteau 6-4, 6-4 . ... Martina Hingis announced that she will retire from tennis for the third time in her career at the end of the WTA Finals.
