Isner is upset in Paris, Sock reaches final

- wire reports

Qualifier Filip Krajinovic of Serbia reached the Paris Masters final after upsetting John Isner 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5) on Saturday.

The American also was playing for a berth in the elite eight-man ATP Finals, and that ended too.

“When I served for the match my hand was shaking,” Krajinovic said. “It was tough to control the emotions. Best day in my life but the tournament is not over yet.”

He will play for his first career title against American Jack Sock, who beat Julien Benneteau of France 7-5, 6-2. Sock has never won a Masters title and can qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals in London if he defeats Krajinovic.

Sock dropped his serve twice but broke Benneteau five times. Sock will go for his third title of the year and fourth of his career. Benneteau is retiring.

“I was able to play my game, swing big,” Sock said. “I’m going to have to bring my A game tomorrow. Everyone knows [Krajinovic] is a very talented player and he’s showcasing that.”

The 77th-ranked Krajinovic had won only 17 matches — thwarted by injuries — before Paris.

CoCo Vandeweghe of the United States will take on Julia Goerges of Germany in the WTA Elite Trophy final Sunday at Zhuhai, China.

Vandeweghe advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 semifinal victory over Ashleigh Barty of Australia, and Goerges held serve throughout in a 6-3, 6-3 victory over seventh-seeded Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia.

“I think my results through my whole career have always been early exits or I go deep in tournaments,” Vandeweghe said. “I play better the more I play on the court. I like to compete. I feel more comfortable, more confident with my strokes.”

Vandeweghe is looking for her first WTA title this year. She will travel to Minsk after this tournament to be part of the U.S. team at the Fed Cup final against Belarus.
