Witnesses describe Halladay crash
Roy Halladay was flying his tiny sport plane low over the Gulf of Mexico shortly before it slammed into the water and killed him, witnesses told federal investigators.
The two-time Cy Young Award winner and eight-time All-Star died Tuesday near Tampa, Fla. He was 40.
Noreen Price, an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board, said Halladay’s ICON A5 experienced a “high-energy impact” with the water. She said both flight data recorders were recovered and the plane did not have a voice recorder.
Price said it was too early to say whether Halladay’s crash was related to two crashes this year of A5s, one of which killed the plane’s chief designer and the test pilot.
The NBA said Carmelo Anthony’s flagrant-two foul would stand, but it rescinded the flagrant issued to Oklahoma City Thunder teammate Russell Westbrook.
The league fined Westbrook, Paul George and coach Billy Donovan $15,000 apiece for their criticisms of the officials after the call against Anthony in a game against Portland on Sunday.
Westbrook was issued a flagrant-one foul against Sacramento on Tuesday.
Leadership positions at Football Bowl Subdivision schools continue to be dominated by white men, according to an annual report card from the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport, which gave top-level college sports an overall grade of D-plus for race and gender hiring in leadership positions, with a D-plus for racial hiring and an F for gender hiring.
Overall, whites hold 86.6% of the 395 campus leadership positions reported in the study, which found that 89.2% of university presidents in the FBS were white, as were 83.1% of the athletic directors, 87.4% of faculty athletics representatives and 100% of conference commissioners.
More than 72% of FBS university presidents are white men. Among athletic directors, 78% were white men and 5.4% were white women. There were only 22 people of color in those roles.
The study also found that nearly 87% of head coaches in the FBS are white. Nearly 56% of football players are black and 39% are white.
The Boston Red Sox said 17year-old catching prospect Daniel Flores died from complications during treatment for cancer. Flores was signed out of Venezuela in July.

Sun Young Yoo carded a sevenunder-par 65 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Blue Bay LPGA tournament at Hainan, China.
Yoo had seven birdies and hit 12 of 14 fairways in a bogey-free round. Xiang Sui had a 66 to hold the second spot, one ahead of five players at five under, including American Lizette Salas.
