U.S. wins Fed Cup
A 17-year championship drought ended for the United States when it beat host Belarus 3-2 to take its 18th Fed Cup title.
CoCo Vandeweghe and Shelby Rogers defeated Aryna Sabalenka and Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the deciding doubles, and Vandeweghe proved the difference between the two teams. She won all eight Fed Cup matches she played this season — six singles and two doubles. Vandeweghe is the first player to win eight matches since the current eight-team World Group format was introduced in 2005.
“It feels perfectly believable and unbelievable,” Vandeweghe said. “I’m ready for a vacation.”
Roger Federer won his opening match at the season-ending ATP Finals, beating American Jack Sock 6-4, 7-6 (4) in London.
Kevin Sutherland is the Champions Tour’s 2017 champ after winning the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship, closing with a five-under 66 for a onestroke victory over Vijay Singh at Phoenix Country Club. Bernhard Langer, the winner of the first two playoff events, had a 64 to tie for 12th. He slipped to second in the standings, missing a chance to win the title for the fourth straight year and fifth overall . ... Patton Kizzire won his first PGA Tour title by beating Rickie Fowler in a 36-hole marathon in the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in Mexico.
Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert will be out for the next month with an injured right leg. He’s averaging 13.9 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game.
Hannah Brandt scored twice and the United States beat Canada 5-1 in Tampa, Fla., to win their third straight Four Nations Cup hockey championship . ... Germany beat the United States men 5-1 in the Deutschland Cup finale as the U.S. fell to 0-3-0 in the Olympic tuneup.
Croatia and Switzerland both qualified for the 2018 World Cup, advancing on aggregate scores despite 0-0 draws in the second leg of their playoffs against Greece and Northern Ireland, respectively.
