Sierra Canyon claims volleyball title

Chatsworth Sierra Canyon won its first state girls’ volleyball championsh­ip with a 25-18, 28-26, 25-22 win over Atherton Sacred Heart Prep on Saturday at Rancho Santiago College.

May Pertofsky, a Michigan commit, finished with 19 kills. Sophomore Jaylen Jordan, the granddaugh­ter of Olympic champion Rafer Johnson, had 11 kills.

Santa Margarita won the Division 1 state title on Friday with a three-set win over Union City Logan. Sarah Ciszek finished with 15 kills and Taylor Heberle had 11 kills. Devon Chang, a UCLA signee, had 34 assists and Colgate signee Ashley Chow had 20 digs.

Santa Margarita lost in the Southern Section quarterfin­als but was unstoppabl­e in the state playoffs. The Eagles lost one set in five playoff matches.

Cross country

Claudia Lane of Malibu continued her march toward repeating as the nation’s top female cross country runner by winning the Foot Locker West Regional in 16:59.6 on Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.

Last week, Lane won the Division IV state championsh­ip. She will be favored to win the national championsh­ip next Saturday at Balboa Park in San Diego.

Alyssa Bautista of Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley finished fifth in 18:18. Also qualifying was Chole Arriaga of Walnut.

Rancho Cucamonga’s Darius Riley advanced to the boys’ division national championsh­ip.

Football

The pairings for the CIF state championsh­ip football bowl games will be released on Sunday. Each of the Southern Section’s 13 champions earns an automatic berth. The City Section sends three champions: Narbonne, Crenshaw and Huntington Park. Regional games are set for next Friday and Saturday. The championsh­ips are Dec. 15-16. Sacramento State will host five of the state finals.
