Nets trade for 76ers’ Okafor

The Philadelph­ia 76ers traded beleaguere­d center Jahlil Okafor to the Brooklyn Nets.

Okafor, the No. 3 pick in the 2015 draft, was dropped from the rotation this season and has played in only two games. The 76ers also sent guard Nik Stauskas and a 2019 second-round pick to the Nets for forward Trevor Booker.

A federal judge in Grand Rapids, Mich., sentenced Larry Nassar, the former Olympic team doctor accused of molesting dozens of young gymnasts and other athletes, to 60 years in prison on a separate child pornograph­y charge. The 54-yearold Nassar has pleaded guilty to additional molestatio­n crimes in state court and faces sentencing in those criminal cases next month. A number of famous U.S. gymnasts, including McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas, have said that Nassar assaulted them under the guise of providing medical treatments. “He abused my trust, he abused my body and he left scars on my psyche that may never go away . ... He needs to be behind bars so he will never prey upon another child,” Maroney wrote in a victim impact statement.

The NHL took a significan­t step toward expanding to 32 teams when Commission­er Gary Bettman said the league had agreed to consider an applicatio­n from a group led by renowned film and TV producer Jerry Bruckheime­r and investment banker David Bonderman to place a team in Seattle “and to let them run in the next few months a season ticket drive.” Bettman said the expansion fee was set at $650 million, which is $150 million more than Vegas Golden Knights owner Bill Foley paid to establish a team in Las Vegas that made its debut this season. Separately, Bettman said the Carolina Hurricanes had entered into a purchase agreement to sell the majority interest in the franchise to Dallas-based businessma­n Tom Dundon, who would keep the team in Raleigh, N.C.

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d’Or award as soccer’s best player of the year for a record-equaling fifth time, moving him level with Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

Right-hander Tyler Chatwood and the Chicago Cubs agreed to a $38-million, three-year contract. Chatwood, who turns 28 next week, was 8-15 with a 4.69 ERA in 33 appearance­s, including 25 starts, for the Colorado Rockies last season.

Former national team goalkeeper Hope Solo announced on Facebook that she is running for president of the U.S. Soccer Federation.
