Gonzalez released by the Braves

First baseman Adrian Gonzalez was released by the Atlanta Braves, who acquired him Saturday in a five-player trade with the Dodgers.

Gonzalez, 35, waived his notrade clause with the understand­ing that he would be cut loose by the Braves and become a free agent.

The five-time All-Star was limited to 71 games with the Dodgers last season because of injuries. He batted .242.

Gonzalez has a .288 batting average, 311 home runs and 1,176 runs batted in during a 14-year career that includes stints with the Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox.

First baseman Mitch Moreland is remaining with the Red Sox, agreeing to a $13-million, two-year contract. Moreland batted .246 with 22 home runs and 79 RBIs last season, his first in Boston.

Miami Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto requested a trade in the wake of the team’s payroll purge, a person familiar with the situation said.

The person confirmed Realmuto’s request to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because discussion­s with the Marlins were private.

Miami traded major league home run champion Giancarlo Stanton, All-Star left fielder Marcell Ozuna and major league stolen base champion Dee Gordon this month.

Realmuto hit .278 with 17 homers last season.

Scott Frost is the AP college football coach of the year after leading Central Florida to an unbeaten season and a spot in the Peach Bowl.

Frost has been hired as coach by Nebraska but plans to complete the season with the 10thranked Knights, who play No. 7 Auburn on Jan. 1.

Frost took over at Central Florida two years ago with the Knights coming off an 0-12 season. He got them to a bowl game last season, finishing 6-7.

The Galaxy acquired the rights to goalkeeper David Bingham from the San Jose Earthquake­s in exchange for $200,000 in allocation money. Bingham, 28, is a former MLS All-Star who has played three games with the U.S. national team.

Giovanni Savarese was hired as coach of the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer, replacing Caleb Porter, who parted ways with the club last month after five seasons.

Savarese was coach of the North American Soccer League’s New York Cosmos since 2012. He led the team to three Soccer Bowl championsh­ips in five seasons.

The ex-wife of slain NBA player Lorenzen Wright made her first court appearance in Riverside County, where she was brought into court in a wheelchair.

Her case was delayed until Wednesday while she undergoes a medical evaluation. Eric Keen, her lawyer, wouldn’t comment on her medical condition or why she was in a wheelchair.

Wright, 46, was arrested Friday and charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

Lorenzen Wright was 34 when he was found shot to death in 2010. A new tip in 2016 led investigat­ors to a lake in Walnut, Miss., where divers found a firearm.

This month, 46-year-old Billy Ray Turner was arrested and pleaded not guilty to a murder charge.
