Moss and Huntley lift Utah over West Virginia
Zach Moss ran for 150 yards with a career-long 58yard run for a touchdown, Tyler Huntley scored twice on two-yard runs and Utah defeated West Virginia 30-14 on Tuesday in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.
“It was very important for us to come out of the gates with a big play early on and set the tone,” said Moss, who like Huntley still has two seasons left with the Utes.
It was the fifth consecutive bowl victory for the Utes (7-6). They are 11-1 in bowl games under coach Kyle Whittingham, who tied Alabama’s Nick Saban for most bowl victories by an active coach.
“He knows how to coach the team and he always caps the year off right,” Huntley said of Whittingham.
The Mountaineers (7-6) finished the season with their third consecutive loss. They had only 153 total yards without junior quarterback Will Grier, who broke a finger Nov. 18, and 1,000-yard rusher Justin Crawford ,a senior who bypassed the bowl game in advance of the NFL draft.
Jones leads Duke
Daniel Jones threw for two touchdowns and ran for one, and Duke beat Northern Illinois 36-14 in the Quick Lane Bowl at Detroit.
Jones finished with 338 total yards, and Shaun Wilson and Brittain Brown scored touchdowns for the Blue Devils (7-6).
“We knew Northern Illinois had a lot of success rushing the passer this year, but our offensive line really controlled things,” Jones said. “That really opened things up for our offense.”
Redshirt freshman quarterback Marcus Childers threw for 234 yards and a touchdown for the Huskies (8-5), and fellow redshirt freshman Tre Harbison ran for a touchdown.
“Marcus and I know that this offseason is crucial,” Harbison said. “If we work hard, we should have a special backfield next year.”
Speaks to test NFL
Mississippi defensive lineman Breeland Speaks is bypassing his final year of college eligibility and entering the NFL draft.
Speaks, 6 feet 3 and 285 pounds, released a statement through the school.
He was second on the team this year with 67 tackles, including eight for a loss and seven sacks. He led the Rebels with eight quarterback hurries.
Speaks entered the Mississippi program in 2014 and was a redshirt his first season before playing the last three years.
